Girls in games falls to 4%

No Comments Posted in: Other | September 9, 2010

The number of women in the UK games industry has fallen by six percent in the last four years, according to a study.

A report based on research carried out by University Of Liverpool PhD student Julie Prescott suggests women make up just four percent on the industry and attributes the decline to the industry’s long working hours and dissatisfaction with working environments.

450 women were surveyed for the report, of which 43 percent claimed the industry’s long hours and crunch culture had a negative impact on their well-being. The sheer amount of men probably doesn’t help either.

32 percent said they worked an excess of 45 hours per week, with 22 percent claiming they worked between 46 and 55 hours and 10 percent claimed to have worked over 56 hours in a normal working week.

“Changing workplace structures, as well as improving childcare provisions, would enable both genders to have active careers,” suggested Prescott.

21 percent of women in the industry had children, according to the report while 69 percent of those surveyed were under the age of 35.

Activision supposedly voiced its belief that female leads don’t sell games in August. Maybe if there were actually some women in the industry that mentality would change.
