Wii U Revolutionising FPS Genre
Wii U can change the way players interact with first-person shooters, according to Nintendo EAD’s Katsuya Eguchi.
Speaking in the latest issue of Edge, which is arriving with subscribers now and features an 8-page Wii U cover feature, Eguchi said Nintendo’s “very happy and excited” about the FPS possibilities with its innovative controller.
“A very key part of the new controller is the screen,” he explained. “You saw the video at E3 of the Zapper with the controller perched on top of it.
“When we were testing that, and playing around with it, we realised that in terms of an FPS, it had changed the way we were interacting with it and how much closer it felt. That was one of the moments that made us very happy and excited,” he told Edge.
The Wii U controller features built-in gyroscopes that, in theory, would allow for augmented reality ironsight aiming away from the television in games like Battlefield and Call of Duty with the on-board touchscreen.
You can see it in action via the video on this page, and we must say we’re quite excited about the possibilities too. Being able to fire at opponents that aren’t visible on the TV screen – or even spin 180-degrees – could prove a fantastic feature.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said he hopes the new console will attract major first-person shooter developers.
He told executives at E3: “I feel that we will have an opportunity and we will be able to bring many of those key [FPS] franchises to Wii U as a result of the work that we’ve done so far.”
