Xbox TV Development Stalls
Microsoft has reportedly put plans to launch an original, subscription-based TV service for Xbox on hold.
Reuters sources claim the platform holder had been engaged in talks with potential content partners for more than a year, but opted to draw back after deciding that the licensing costs of offering current shows and live networks were too prohibitive for the business model it wanted to pursue.
“They built Microsoft TV, they demoed it for us, they asked for rate cards but then said ‘ooh ah, that’s expensive,’” said an unnamed senior media executive. “It doesn’t mean they won’t be back in another iteration. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Microsoft’s TV service would reportedly have enabled users to change channels with voice and motion controls using Kinect.
